Oliver Street Resident Honored by Troy Women's Group
Janet M. Weber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond M. Weber, 30 Oliver Street, Cohoes, has been awarded the two-year scholarship of $200 annually, given by the Troy Women's University Club, Mrs. Charles H. Tobin, chairman of the scholarship committee, announced yesterday.
On July 1, Miss Weber entered R.P.I. where she expects to obtain a degree in chemical engineering. Under the present college program, she will complete the four-year course in two years and eight months.
Besides attending college, Miss Weber is working fourteen hours a week doing general office work in one of Troy's stores, and she is life guard on Sundays and nights at the Cohoes swimming pool. She has also worked on the rationing of food, sugar, fuel and gasoline.
At Cohoes High School from which she was graduated in June, she took part in dramatics and athletics, was a member of the Art Club and of the Hi-Tri Club, president of the Junior and Senior Book Club in her junior year, editor-in-chief of the 1944 Year Book, and valedictorian of her class. Twice she represented Cohoes High School on the Little Red Schoolhouse radio program.
The scholarship award made bi-annually by the Troy Women's University Club is granted on the basis of outstanding scholarship, need of financial aid, personality and recommendations from the high school principal and the student counselor.
